How to Dermaplane at Home in 3 Easy Steps

If you’ve ever wanted smoother makeup application or that fresh glow without booking a facial, dermaplaning (also called microplaning) is the secret. The good news is you don’t need a spa appointment, you can do it at home with a simple tool. I’ve tested three options I really like: a manual facial razor (great for beginners), a battery-operated tool and a rechargeable professional style dermaplaner. Each one works, it’s just about your comfort and budget.

Here’s a clean, three step guide to dermaplaning at home:

Step 1: Prep your skin and tool

  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat completely dry.

  • Pull your hair back, use good lighting and wash your hands.

  • Stop retinoids and strong acids for 2-3 days before you start.

  • Sanitize the blade or tool head with 70% alcohol.

  • Optional: If your skin is very dry, you can use a drop or two of squalane or dry face oil with a manual razor. Most powered tools are designed for dry skin with no product, but check your device guide.

Step 2: Glide in short, light strokes

  • Manual razor: Hold skin taut and keep the blade at a 45° angle. Use feather light downward strokes in the direction of hair growth on cheeks, jawline, upper lip and forehead. Wipe the blade as it collects fuzz and skin.

  • Battery/Rechargeable tool: Attach the guard, set to low speed and keep the head flat with very light pressure. Use short overlapping passes, moving steadily and avoid going over the same area more than twice.

  • Skip over active acne, cuts, moles and brows. Take your time around the nose and hairline.

Step 3: Soothe and protect

  • Wipe away debris, rinse with cool water and pat dry.

  • Apply a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid and a simple ceramide moisturizer.

  • Avoid acids, scrubs or retinoids for 24-48 hours.

  • Apply SPF 30+ daily.

  • Clean the blade or head with alcohol after use. Replace disposables each session. Recharge or safely store your device. Plan to dermaplane every 2-4 weeks.

Quick Safety Notes

  • Don’t dermaplane over inflamed acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn or during a rosacea flare.

  • If you’re on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or very sensitive skin, check with your dermatologist first.

  • Peach fuzz does not grow back thicker or darker, it just feels blunt at first as it grows out.
